First Illuminated Places

The Course of Lighting in Turkey

The first electricity production in our country was provided by the hydroelectric power plant established in Tarsus during the reign of Abdülhamid II. With this system, established in 1902, Tarsus went down in history as the first city to be illuminated, but the first houses to be illuminated were the homes of Müftüzade Sadık Pasha (Sadık Eliyeşil) and Judge Yakup Efendi. Thanks to the continuously developing electricity production after this period, especially after 1930, the number of businesses in the field of lighting also gradually increased. It has been a century since Turkey entered the lighting sector. In our country, many importing and exporting companies have been established over a period of more than 100 years. We can understand in which year the sector started exporting products abroad by making a small comparison. Looking at our recent history, in 1990, our country's export value was around 14 million dollars, while imports were around 13 million dollars. This indicates that some lighting systems were still not produced in our country. By the 1994 crisis, imported products in the sector had declined, with import value dropping to 12 million dollars and export value rising to 21 million dollars. In this period, when purchases were reduced and production increased, it became mandatory for our sector to produce innovative products, and this period is considered the development phase of the sector.

Current Sector Status

In the following years, imports were predominant until 200. During the economic crisis of 2001, the continuous increase in export values brought the lighting sector in Turkey to the forefront as an exporting sector globally, and Turkey's share in the sector increased. During this period, the price of apmul, the prices of electric lighting, and the prices of expensive strip LEDs gradually decreased and have continued this trend to the present day. In recent years, the Turkish lighting sector has expanded its product range according to the needs of architects and has become a preferred country in the world. For this reason, its export capacity has continuously increased, and it has become influential in the market. Looking at the general structure of businesses in our country, it is seen that the structure of importing companies is dominant. The fact that lighting constitutes an important detail in interior and design decorations, the daily changes in tastes and lifestyles, and the development of technology have led to the creation of businesses with an export structure. The increase in the number of companies producing according to quality standards, especially in recent years, can be seen as proof of this.
