The Early Days of Translation
When we look at the history of translation, it is accepted that the first translations were made in writing before the written language emerged. Later, with the invention of writing, written translation began to be made, and one of the first examples of this is a stone called the Rosetta Stone, which has a text in hieroglyphic writing and ancient Egyptian, and its ancient Greek translation. For these reasons, after the invention of writing, translation work is generally examined in two forms: written and oral translation.
Written translation; Looking at its development processes, it is seen that these written
translation systems laid the foundations of written translation with ancient and eternal texts as well as scientific texts. The main reason for translating from ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic, Persian, and languages spoken in Anatolia is the eternal and scientific developments that occurred in ancient times.
The Difference Between Past and Present Translation
With later periods compared to the past, the development in fields such as trade, law, medicine, and education greatly necessitated translation work in these areas. For these reasons, translation bureaus and translation have now started to form their own internal areas in written form. Another type of translation is legal translation, which refers to the translation of all texts that fall within the scope of law, such as laws and directives, court documents, criminal law, labor law, and similar legal texts. At the same time, legal translation has its own special jargon in all languages, including Turkish, and for a person who is not knowledgeable about the subject, it can turn into a difficult labyrinth to get out of a legal text. For these reasons, translators who perform legal translation must be individuals who specialize in the subject and are familiar with the jargon. Technical translation is one of the types of translation that has its own distinct language, such as legal translation systems, which include the translation of texts such as product exchanges between companies, product lists, product approvals, long articles on technological developments, or technical specifications about products. At the same time, the translation of technical texts includes usages such as technical names and names of machine parts that do not exist in everyday language, and it is a field that requires expertise.
